WRITERS’ GROUPS THAT WORK

A writing group is a bit like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Its quality very much depends on how well it's taken care of. A good writing group gives inspiration, motivation, community, perspective, and of course, constructive criticism.  Unfortunately, groups often get bogged down in squabbles and ennui.

Bananafish is a series of writing groups around the idea that it's worth a few bucks ($50 per month in this case) to hire a writer/teacher to handle the logistics, moderate the meetings, and keep everything on an even keel. It's my job to stimulate inspired discussion and tease out helpful feedback while making sure that all voices are heard and no one gets beaten up.

NYC

Starting in the fall, 2010, our New York group will meet in the East Village on alternate Monday evenings for two hours twice a month.

ONLINE
For writers outside the New York area, there is normally an online group, but at the moment, it is dormant.  When it’s active, we communicate and share works online and have realtime teleconference meetings twice a month.

In the spirit of healthy cross-pollination, all genres are welcome. You don't have to be a published writer to join, but these groups aren't for absolute beginners.  If you're interested, request to join our group and sit in on a meeting.
